Puffer Jacket
As we start getting into the colder months, you’re going to want a warm jacket, and what better jacket than a puffer jacket? A puffer jacket will keep you warm without weighing you down, and they are incredibly packable too. The two main types of puffer jackets are down and synthetic. Down is very lightweight and packable, but when it gets wet, it loses all insulation value. Synthetic is a bit heavier, but it stays warm when wet. You can also get jackets with a mix of the two, which offer the best of both worlds. You can get good puffer jackets from brands like REI, Columbia, Patagonia, and any other good outdoor brand. A good puffer jacket can be anywhere from $50 to $300.
Waterproof Shell
Having a good shell is just as if not more important than having a puffer jacket, as a shell will block wind and rain, to keep you warm and dry. A good shell will be breathable yet block rain and wind. Some features to look for are a waterproof breathable membrane and armpit vents. The same brands that offer good puffer jackets offer good shells, and some will offer a combo with both a puffer jacket and a shell that connect together. A good shell will be anywhere from $50 to $200.
